Higher education efficiency frontier analysis: a review of variables to consider

Enviado por jogarcia el Mar, 01/09/2020 - 11:00

The measurement of efficiency in higher education has gained a growing interest in recent years, especially due to the expansion of the university system. This paper provides a review of the literature on efficiency in higher education institutions by covering empirical articles which applied frontier efficiency measurement techniques from 1997 to 2019. We review the methodological approaches used, both parametric and non-parametric techniques, such as Data Envelopment Analysis, Malmquist index and Stochastic Frontier Analysis.

Sleeping Beauty on Monty Hall

Enviado por jogarcia el Sáb, 01/08/2020 - 10:58

Inspired by the Monty Hall Problem and a popular simple solution to it, we present a number of game-show puzzles that are analogous to the notorious Sleeping Beauty Problem (and variations on it), but much easier to solve. We replace the awakenings of Sleeping Beauty by contestants on a game show, like Monty Hall’s, and increase the number of awakenings/contestants in the same way that the number of doors in the Monty Hall Problem is increased to make it easier to see what the solution to the problem is.

Heat warnings and avoidance behavior: evidence from a bike sharing system

Enviado por jogarcia el Mar, 05/05/2020 - 11:02

Governments throughout the globe usually implement early warning systems to prevent health-related costs from exposure to extreme heat. In a warming world, this type of information-provision approach is believed to be an effective way to deal with this natural hazard, even when there is little evidence of its influence on individuals’ behavior. Using detailed information from 1 million trips recorded by a bike-sharing system in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this paper investigates the direct behavioral impact of heat warnings on cycling trips.

Agricultural heterotopia The Soybean Republic(s) of South America

Enviado por jogarcia el Sáb, 02/05/2020 - 11:04

This chapter contends that global agribusiness, the current model of international agriculture, is reorganising national territorial boundaries, reasserting space, and folding countries into a single regional structure: the “Soybean Republic.” This structure corresponds with Foucault’s interpretation of heterotopia as the spatial articulation of a discursive order. Through the imposition of an economic model, geographical and political space in Paraguay has been transformed.

Determining wine relevant markets. An applied method for winery mergers in Argentina

Enviado por jogarcia el Mar, 03/03/2020 - 11:05

TPurpose This study aims to verify how the product-relevant market for wines should be defined. To do so, the authors apply an empirical methodology to determine the levels of substitution among wine-categories, identifying each relevant market in Argentina. Design/methodology/approach The authors perform an econometric analysis applying the nested logit methodology that will enable us to estimate cross elasticities in wine segments in the Argentine market. The database contains 1,367 brands and a maximum of 395 firms offering products of different segments.

Advancing Autonomy? Chinese Influence on Regional Governance in Latin America

Enviado por jogarcia el Sáb, 25/01/2020 - 10:43

This chapter examines the contradictory impact of China on recent attempts to construct autonomous regional governance in Latin America. Although China’s growing economic presence has seemingly created opportunities for countries to reduce their dependence on the United States, Chinese economic influence has been decidedly liberal in nature. China’s diverse ties with Latin America do not suggest an ideological preference for post-hegemonic or post-liberal regionalism. Bilaterally, China counts both liberal and anti-liberal governments among its strategic partners.

The political economy of China-Latin America relations

Enviado por jogarcia el Vie, 24/01/2020 - 11:13

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is the only global South region wherein just one country, Ecuador, has become a full member of the AIIB, in November 2019 after 22.5 months. Seven more countries are “prospective” members, in order of joining: Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. This chapter introduces the research question that has guided this book: Why have the Latin American prospective members of the AIIB been so unsuccessful at complying with the membership-completion process?
