A new linkage between corporate and public governance through the lens of incremental cash flows

Enviado por mivickas el

While in the study of Corporate Governance we can avail ourselves of the incremental cash-flow model (ICFM), the analysis of Public Governance has been falling behind with this issue. The paper sets forth an innovative linkage between both fields of learning and practice, by means of a suitable framing of such model that would allow us to take advantage of a deeper research focus just within the interface of both governances. Firstly, the ICM is derived in the current shape that experts in Corporate Governance make use of it.

Self-assessed health as a key determinant of lifestyles: An application to tobacco consumption in Argentina

Enviado por mivickas el

The relationship between lifestyle choices and health has been widely studied in the epidemiological and economic literature. In the last years, empirical research was directed towards the use of recursive systems with structural equations for a health production function and reduced form equations for lifestyles. As a result, behaviors toward health are taken to be determined by exogenous socio-economic variables. In this article, we show that health is a key determinant of health habits. When people feel well, they adopt less healthy behaviors.

The economic value of ideology

Specialization and trade rest on institutions that protect property rights and enforce agreements. Frequently, in economic analysis institutions are just assumed to exist, or it is implicitly supposed that the political game can establish them. Once this assumption is done, the invisible hand does its work properly. It doesn’t matter if humans beings are benevolent or selfish for the gains from specialization and trade be realized. However, it is not easy to build institutions, neither are they a free lunch.

The emergence of Peronism meant a quantitative problem for all political parties, for the potential loss of electoral support. For the Argentine Communist Party (ACP), it was a theoretical problem as well – the working class, the subject of History for Marxists, was deviating from its historical mission. Moreover, as a member of the international Communist movement guided by the Soviet Union and because of the priority it was giving to the anti-Fascist struggle, the ACP found itself confronting “Nazi-Peronism” – a mass movement stemming from a Fascist-like military dictatorship.

The impact of human capital on firm-level input use: Argentine agriculture

Enviado por mivickas el

This paper attempts to understand the linkages between human capital and input choice in agricultural firms. The hypothesis to be tested is that better educated managers choose different input combinations than managers with a lower educational level. In particular, the hypothesis is that the ratio between non-land and land input increases as education increases. Non-land inputs include fertilizers, machinery services, herbicides, animal stocks and others. An increase in the non-land/land input ratio results in increased output (and costs) per unit of land.

Cost of capital adjusted for governance risk through a multiplicative model of expected returns

Enviado por mivickas el

This paper sets forth another contribution to the long standing debate over cost of capital, firstly by introducing a multiplicative model that translates the inner structure of the weighted average cost of capital rate and, secondly, adjusting such rate for governance risk. The conventional wisdom states that the cost of capital may be figured out by means of a weighted average of debt and capital.
